So you’ve decided that the Costa del Sol is the place where you want to start looking for a Campsite but you’re not sure which area. This area is one of the most diverse Costa resorts in Spain so you’ll have your pick when it comes to looking for a holiday campsite by the beach or residential style caravan park in the Spanish countryside.

Alhaurín de la Torre

Alhaurín de la Torre is a town symobilised by it’s white washed houses and in an area that is quickly becoming popular among tourists and visitors. As a result , the sedate pace, quiet streets and sense of isolation have been replaced by a wider variety of inhabitants due to the easy access to Málaga and the coast. This is the perfect combination for many but if your preference is for traditional Andalucía, you’re a few decades too late.

Campsites in Alhaurín de la Torre: Camping Málaga Monte Parc

Almayate

Almayate is a small coastal town in Andalucia´s Axarquia region, situated 25 kilometres from Malaga (between Benajarafe and Torre del Mar). Comparatively, this is a town of 2 main areas – Almayate Bajo and Almayate Alto. On one hand, Almayate Bajo is a small village on the beach, fringed by sand, sea and sugar cane. Whereas Almayate Alto is the area where where the houses are built close together and most of the town’s population lives.

Benjarafe

Benajarafe is a charming coastal resort, in the east of the Costa del Sol, which boasts a great location, situated beside a long stretch of beach where you will find clear waters and all the water sports your heart desires. That being said, it’s mainly a summer resort, with the population increasing during the summer months and quietening off during the winter months. Furthermore, Inland from the town is the beautiful mountainous Axarquia region, which is ideal for hikers, nature lovers and anybody who appreciates natural beauty.

Benjarafe Campsites: Camping Valle Niza

Estepona

Estepona is one of the few coastal towns in Spain that has succeeded in maintaining its ‘pueblo’ (old Spanish town) charm and character regardless of all the tourist hotels, restaurants, shops and leisure activities. With that being said, the old town of Estepona is colourful and vibrant (but in traditional form) with numerous street cafes and tapas bars still serving traditional Spanish delicacies. Furthermore, if you venture into the side streets and you’ll find bars and small shops where you’d least expect them to be.

Humilladero

Humilladero is a typically laid-back Spanish village with an assortment of small shops including a bakers, school, medical center and supermarkets. In addition, there are several bars and restaurants including an Indian, steakhouse and Italian pizzeria with some offering a takeaway service. Furthermore, this is an area that prides itself on Spanish traditions so expect to celebrate throughout the year during one of the many Spanish Fiestas.

Iznate

You probably wont find a town that is more ‘typically Spanish’ than Iznate, reminding you as you walk the steep narrow streets aligned with white washed houses, passing one of the many Spanish fountains along the way. Consequently, this areas largest export is the Muscat grape followed by avocados, almonds and olives and to this day very much remains a working town.

Las Lagunas de Mijas

Las Lagunas de Mijas is part of Mijas Costa but it has a unique character of its own. The southern part of this area has a cosmopolitan feel with shops bars and restaurants whereas the northern part is rugged and home to Mijas Golf. Furthermore, the transport routes from the south provide good links to both Málaga and Marbella and you’re well placed to discover other resorts on the Costa del Sol.

Manilva

Bordering the sea but overlooked by vineyards, the town of Manilva is filled with culture, history, traditions and good food. Situated in the province of Málaga but bordered by the province of Cádiz expect to find rugged coastlines and undiscovered gems. That said, don’t overlook the cosmopolitan feel of the Puerto de la Duquesa (Port of Duquesa) with it’s small boats and bars and restaurants overlooking the waters edge.

Marbella

Marbella is a resort that doesn’t need much of an introduction. Blessed with some of the best beaches, bars, restaurants and shopping on the Costa del Sol this area has thrived over the years. As a result, it’s a firm favourite with many British Ex-Pats (retired and holiday makers) so expect to find a strong British influence. Likewise, this resort is perfectly located for exploring the whole of the Costa del Sol coastline and if you fancy a ‘taste of Britain’ Gibraltar is a mere 90 minutes away.

Mijas

If you’re looking at ‘home from home’ destination, Mijas may just be your best option. Situated in the mountainside looking towards the sea, this village is about as culturally diverse as you’ll find in Spain. One one hand, you have the typical village environment with white washed houses and historic Spanish landmarks whereas on the other hand, you’ve got the local town hall with English speaking foreigners department. And, Such is the number of foreign residents in this village, the town has embraced them and provided a service to help them settle into their new country.

Ronda

A popular tourist destination, Ronda is the third most visited town in southern Spain. Built on a history of bullfighting (which many say was invented here) and recognised as the largest white washed town in Andalusia, you’ll find yourself stunned by the beauty of a town with a more than interesting past. If that’s not enough just sit back and marvel at the stunning architecture in this town of 2 halves, naturally separated by the El Tajo Gorge.

Torre del Mar

The second largest village in Vélez-Málaga according to the number of people, Torre del Mar is an important tourist destination for all nationalities owing to its spectacular beaches and seafront promenade – which is a regular meeting point for many visitors and people from the village. Furthermore, this is a tourist destination popular for shopping, entertainment and it’s gastronomic speciality of ‘pescaíto’ (fried fish).

Torremolinos

Another popular Spanish resort for the many ex-pats to head to, Torremolinos has outgrown it’s previous reputation as a low cost holiday destination from the 60’s and 70’s. As a result you’ll find this resort has some of the cleanest beaches in Spain, boutique shops and wide choice of both traditional and ex-pat inspired restaurants and bars. At only 9km from Málaga airport, getting to and from this resort is convenient.

Torrox

Torrox is an area which provides the charms of Spain in 2 halves and presents the option of enjoying a stroll by the beach or a walk around a typical whitewashed Spanish village. Set into the mountainside overlooking coastline of the Costa del Sol, Torrox boasts the best climate in Europe with average yearly temperatures rarely dropping below 18 degrees. On the other hand Torrox Costa is a bustling seaside resort with all of the tourist facilities you’d come to expect.

Our favourite areas for the best Campsites is Marbella & Mijas. Why, we hear you ask? Because both of these areas have something on offer for everyone. Firstly, you’ve got the tourist resort of Marbella with its vibrant shopping and dining scene. Secondly, you’ve got Mijas with the history, tradition and familiarity of a village that caters extensively for the British ex-pat.

What to look for when searching Costa del Sol Campsites:

Annual Campsite site fee costs on the Costa del Sol

Site fees on a Campsite on the Costa del Sol range from 4,000€ to 6,000€ annually. This is due to the high level of tourist facilities on offer and being close to major tourist resorts. That said, you’ll find that discounts are in place for paying in advance for the year. Otherwise expect to pay on a monthly or daily basis.

Annual running costs

Consider the following as annual running costs on a campsite on the Costa del Sol: Site fees, gas (bottle), electricity (metered) & Caravan insurance. Water is generally included with the site fees on a campsite in Spain.

Facilities

Facilities differ by campsite on the Costa del Sol so decide what facilities are most important to you. Most campsites will have at least 1 swimming pool and a restaurant / bar area. But, bare in mind that having more facilities generally increases the annual site fee costs. That said, If you’re willing to increase the annual site fee costs then expect to gain additional outdoor pools, indoor swimming pool, gym, children’s play area and even a dog walking or exercise area.

Distance to the nearest town or resort

This should be the most important factor when searching for your a Campsite. You’ll have an area in mind where you want to be so focus your search primarily in that location. Once you’ve found a campsite , calculate the distance to your favourite resort or town using Googlemaps or similar map tool. You may be surprised to see that the campsite you had in mind is further away from the area you’d like to be in.
